SOMERSET18-Jan-2003One of Somerset’s trio of winter signings James Bryant just can’t wait to get over to this country and start playing for his new county.Twenty three year old Bryant who has been playing for Eastern Province in South Africa has just been selected to play in a warm up match against England ahead of the Cricket World Cup that gets underway in early February.However to ensure that everything is in place for the start of the tournament the domestic South African season has been cut short, which has led to Bryant becoming frustrated.Earlier this week he told me: "I am looking forward to the summer at Somerset and from what I hear the pitch is a good deck to bat on which is always good for a batter to hear! I know that the county season is slightly different to ours, especially the volume of games and maybe the weather, but I am approaching it really positively. Naturally I would like Somerset to do well and I have also set myself definite personal goals for the season."He continued: "My season has been fairly good but due to the World Cup we have unfortunately only played half the games we usually play. Never the less I topped the batting averages in both the 4 day and 1 day games and I feel our side could have progressed a lot further in the 1 day competition if we could have played a whole season. I am playing in two World Cup warm up games, one against England and one against Kenya. I am really looking forward to the England game and our coach, Kepler Wessels, is really keen to win that one!"Somerset coach Kevin Shine told me earlier this week: "James will be arriving here at the end of March, which will give him time to get to know everyone and also hopefully get used to playing in English conditions."The coach concluded: "From my dealings with him he seems to be a very well organised hugely personable young man and we are all looking forward very much to meeting him in a couple of months time."
