Kane was handed a soft yellow card for time wasting after he held onto the ball and prevented Mainz from taking a quick free-kick. The Bavarian side eased to a 3-0 victory that puts them on the brink of the title, which they can win with victory at RB Leipzig next weekend, but will be without Kane. The caution was the English forward's fifth of the season and he will face a one-game ban – much to his frustration.

Speaking after the game, Kane said: "Crazy, crazy decision! It's kind of my story that I'll miss the Leipzig game. But no worries, I'll celebrate more than anyone else. I'm very disappointed that I got the yellow card. Because I also knew I already had four yellow cards. It's crazy to be suspended with five yellow cards in 34 matches. It's just a crazy rule. There should be a reset of yellow cards halfway through the season, like in the Premier League."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

It is very much the Kane story to miss the game which will earn the Englishman his first ever trophy. Kane has not got his hands on silverware once in his career and a move to Bayern appeared to promise a breaking of that duck. However, he has been forced to wait for success after Bayer Leverkusen's remarkable campaign last year. Despite missing next week's clash, Bayern and Kane need just two points to be crowned champions once again.

Kane will have to watch on from the sidelines next week as Bayern look to win the Bundesliga. The club need just two points to secure the title and will hope to wrap up their crown next weekend at Leipzig and finally end Kane's trophy jinx.
